Materials Testing

Standard Laboratories newest partner, Touchstone Testing Lab (TTL) is the largest commercial failure analysis, R&D and testing facility in the Mid-Atlantic region. Touchstone Testing is ISO 17025 & NADCAP (both metals & non-metals) accredited.

TTL is equipped with over $15 million in test equipment ranging from electron microscopes, a chemistry laboratory, a metallographic and petrographic laboratory, a world-class mechanical testing facility, physical testing capabilities, a well-equipped corrosion laboratory, machine shops, prototype foundry, rolling mills and a full composites facility. This unique combination has created an excellent foundation for defect analysis and root cause analysis.

The team of experienced professionals includes: metallurgical, mechanical, aerospace, electrical, and chemical engineers; materials scientists; chemists; physicists; computer scientists; and microbiologists.

Materials Testing

At TTL, we have capabilities to test materials and products under a variety of loading conditions like tension, compression, shear, torsion, etc. In addition, we also have capabilities to run dynamic tests like impact, drop tower tests, fatigue, creep, etc.

Composites, metal matrix composites, titanium, steel, aluminum, super-alloys, plastics, foam, nanomaterials and coal are just a few of the numerous materials evaluated at Touchstone.

Failure Investigations

Over the years Touchstone has performed thousands of failure investigations. Among the typical failure mechanisms studied are:

  • Corrosion
  • Liquid Metal Embrittlement
  • Crevice Corrosion
  • Marine Corrosion
  • Ductile and Brittle Fractures
  • Pitting Corrosion
  • Fatigue
  • Stress Corrosion Cracking
  • Galvanic Corrosion
  • Uniform Corrosion
  • Hydrogen Embrittlement
  • Wear Fractures
  • Intergranular Corrosion
