Sampling Systems

Obtaining a representative, non-bias, sample is the first, and most critical step in providing accurate and precise laboratory analysis. Without a representative sample, there is little value in the analytical results.

Since sampling is such an important laboratory tasks, SL is dedicated to the pursuit of providing the best sampling equipment for each specific job.

Independently and through our partnerships with Precision Samplers, Inc. & Sampling Associates International; SL sampling capabilities include:
  • Design & Engineering
  • Fabrication
  • Installation
  • Inspection
  • Operation
  • Maintenance
  • Bias testing
Of many different types of bulk material sampling systems.

Bias Testing

The purpose of a bias test is to determine if the differences between the reference samples and samples collected by the sampling system are statistically significant. These differences are commonly referred to as bias. In many cases, the test will be designed according ASTM D7430-10a, Standard Practice for Mechanical Sampling of Coal, Part D.

Standard Laboratories, Inc. has a highly qualified bias testing crew capable of performing bias tests on new and existing bulk sampling systems.

During a pre-inspection prior to the bias test, our team has the expertise to detect problems that could cause bias in your system and then provide expert technical advice on the most effective way to address this.

Then, our team will design the program to ensure that the system samples used for comparison will be of sufficient mass to represent the particle size of the final sample material and that sampling system collects the minimum mass requirements indicated in Table 1 of ASTM D2013-09, Standard Practice for Preparing Coal Samples for Analysis.

The analysis from the reference samples and the system samples will be subjected to the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Non-parametric Test (ASTM D7430-10a), usually using up to 5 different parameters to be subjected to the statistical treatment.
