The year of 2013 begin with the acquisition of Gilbert Testing of Gilbert, WV. This lab was owned by Terry Sammons who was a partner in Appalachian States Analytical and will be discussed under “Acquisitions”. Dave Richards was manager. A lab in Birch River, Wv (managed out of Belington) was opened in 2012 (closed in 2013) along with a lab in Grafton, Wv where Rick Malcolm had become manager. This lab was in support of Leer Coal under the name of ACI Tygart. A satellite ash chemistry lab was installed at Mount Vernon, IND.

In a major promotion Claudette Young was promoted to West Virginia Division Manager on June 26. In 2011, a lab in Middletown, Ohio was established to service Coke Carbon. This facility quickly evolved into the company’s most proficient metallurgical coal testing operation. The manager was Dave Schueller followed by Joy Wright. A small lab was

2010 saw the asset purchase of AC&S’s environmental testing equipment and a lab was established in Nitro, WV which was soon moved to the South Charleston lab and became the new venture, “Standard Environmental Lab,” managed by Sharon Blankenship. For more information see “Acquisitions” section.

Lois Stofko was named manager of the Huntington, Utah Lab (which formerly operated out of the Helper, Utah lab at the Skyline mine) in 2009. After many months of negotiations Std acquired both Coal Operators Analytical Lab Inc (COAL) and Natural Earth Science Testing Services (NEST) from Margo Bartlett of Belington, WV in 2007. Std Labs was fortunate enough to hire Allen Seaman in November of this year as Manager of Technical Projects. Allen had been with Kanawha Scales and SGS in a number of roles where he became highly recognized in the technical community within the coal testing industry. Rick Flesher was promoted to Chief Executive Officer in 2005 and Troy Stallard moved to the Chairman of the Board position. That same year Greg Pendergrass became President of Precision Samplers, Inc. Troy Stallard was named Who’s Who in Business in West Virginia by The State Journal publication.

Unfortunately the company experienced some fires at both its Holden, WV and Pikeville facilities in 2003. Neither fire resulted in substantial loss, but caused serious and intensive safety and fire prevention training at all operations across the company. 2003 also saw the startup of a new lab in Warncliffe, Wv with Donald Kerns as manager.

Shauna McNabb was named Spring Creek lab manager in Decker, Montana when Std Labs was, again, awarded the Spring Creek lab contract after a three year hiatus.
